Team Spartan won its division in the Salem Hoopla for the second year in a row, defeating De La Sol from Portland 36-31.
The event, which is the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Oregon, was held July 23 through 25 on Court Street in front of the Capitol Building. It set records of 750 teams, 3,000 participants and 40,000 spectators this year.
Playing on the Sheridan team in the 17-and-under boys’ recreational division were Sheridan Spartans Beau Bradford, Henry Von Euen and Brock Ingram and friend Andrew Albin. Previously, Spartan teammate Tre Hale-Edmerson joined the other Sheridan players in the tournament, but commitments to summer AAU basketball kept him away this year.
Although temperatures topped 90 degrees during the tournament, they did not seem to slow the players.
Each 3-on-3 game is won by the first team to score 35 points in a 25-minute time limit.
This was the fourth year the Spartans participated. They reached the finals the first two years and took the division title the next two.
Ingram, Von Euen and Bradford, all of whom will be seniors for the 2010-11 basketball season, have been playing together since the fourth grade.
Von Euen, recalling that “at least 18” teams competed in the 17-and-under boys’ recreational division, said the tournament “definitely” made him and his teammates sharper for the coming West Valley League season.
Asked whether it was his last basketball game before practice for the 2010-11 season, Von Euen said, “I’m sure we’ll get together and play around a little.”
