Festivities include Honored Court tea for two local women
By Marguerite Alexander Editor, The Sun
Two women with deep roots in the West Valley will be honored at a tea on Saturday as the Phil Sheridan Days Honored Court. Ruth Green Davis, who was raised in the Sheridan-Willamina area, has lived her whole life in Yamhill County. Dorothy Hawk, a 1947 graduate of Willamina High School, has lived in Sheridan since 1965.
Davis, the second oldest of nine children, was raised on the farm. She attended school in Willamina before enrolling in school in Buell. She graduated from high school in Sheridan and later graduated from McMinnville Beauty School.

Garbage rates go up
It’s going to cost West Valley residents more for garbage service–but not much. Representatives from Recology Western Oregon approached both the Willamina and Sheridan city councils this month to request a rate increase of 0.80 percent.
That translates into an increase of between 6 and 20 cents per month for curbside service, depending on the city, size of container and frequency of pickup.

Time to clean up the city
By Marguerite Alexander Editor, The Sun
By the time Sheridan is ready to celebrate it’s annual Sheridan Days festivities next year, the city council hopes to have resolved some of its concerns about dangerous and abandoned buildings in the community.
The council recently adopted a building maintenance ordinance. Even though applying the new ordinance will initially cause some discord, the council agreed it was time to apply them to local buildings and tell the owners to fix them up.

Deibel to chair Safe, Sound Schools for Sheridan PAC
By Meredith Lawrence Correspondent, The Sun
The Sheridan School District has decided to put its bond re-financing measure on the November 2013 ballot.
The measure is designed to allow the district to take advantage of last year’s bond sale. When the district sold the bond last year, it was at a lower interest rate than the original bond rate. Consequently, the district is asking the voters to keep their property tax rate at its current rate per assessed property value, for the remaining time of the bond.
